What Can You Do about Bony Growths in Your Mouth?

Posted on 3/25/2016 by Renee Bancroft
A woman suffering from bony growths inside her mouth. We all spend some time in front of the mirror checking out our teeth. Perhaps we are looking at changes in our bite or discolorations, or maybe we are simply inspecting them to make sure they are cleaned properly after a good brushing.

However, some people notice bony growths around the gum line when they look in the mirror. What are those and what can you do to get rid of them?

What is Tori?

If you notice that you have bony growths near the gum line, it is likely that you are dealing with a condition called exostosis, which is more commonly referred to as tori. This condition is common in people who are living with TMJ disorder, but haven't gotten treatment form the problem, but crooked teeth could also be the problem.

What Causes Bony Growths?

Not everyone with TMJ will suffer from bony growths, but the two things are connected. Often these growths form when the jaw is put under too much pressure and the body unconsciously tries to realign it. The build-up of bone is your body's way of trying to protect the teeth, ensuring they have the support that they need to take on the increased tension and pressure.

What Should You Do about These Bony Growths?

If you notice that you have new growths in your mouth, please contact our dental office. Your oral surgeon will remove the growths, but if you don't treat the underlying cause, they will likely reappear.

To make sure they don't come back, TMJ therapy is needed so that the joint is no longer imbalanced and that any problem with the jaw being crooked is corrected. This way, the TMJ will no longer experience excessive tension or stress and will stop producing extra bone.
