Don't Ignore Your Dry Mouth
Posted on 12/27/2015 by Renee Bancroft
Does your mouth often feel dry? While this is a common occurrence that most of us will deal with once in a while, if you find that you are dealing with it consistently, it could be the result of a dental problem. Make sure that you're not ignoring your dry mouth.
Causes of Dry Mouth
In many cases, dry mouth is simply a sign of dehydration, and drinking water can correct the issue. However, there are other causes that you should know about, and by identifying the reason that you're experiencing dry mouth, you can find the right treatment option.
Medications. There are a variety of medications that list dry mouth as a potential side effect. Some of these drugs are used to treat anxiety, neuropathy, and depression, although over-the-counter antihistamines, pain medications, and decongestants can also cause dry mouth.
Tobacco use. Chewing tobacco and smoking can increase your symptoms of dry mouth.
Health conditions. Dry mouth might be the consequence of an underlying health condition, such as autoimmune diseases or HIV/AIDS.
Nerve damage. A surgery or injury that caused nerve damage to your neck or head can result in a dry mouth.
Treating Dry Mouth
If you experience chronic dry mouth, there are several steps that you can take in order to combat the symptoms.
Sip on water throughout the day to increase your fluid intake and moisten your mouth.
Use an oral rinse that doesn't contain alcohol.
Chew on sugar-free gum of suck on sugarless candies that could stimulate the flow of saliva.
Turn on a humidifier at night if you tend to wake up in the morning with a dry mouth.
You should also be sure to see your dentist to find out if your dry mouth is negatively impacting your oral health. Call us today to set up an appointment.
