Your permanent teeth ideally will last you a lifetime. Unfortunately, though this is not the reality with most of us as there will come a point in many people's lives where they will require a tooth extraction. Tooth extraction is required in many different circumstances including a tooth that is damaged beyond repair due to decay or trauma. Some other reasons include:
In some cases, tooth decay can make its way to the pulp of the tooth- the home for all of the tooth's blood vessels and nerve endings. When this happens, bacteria can then find their way to the pulp and cause infection. Generally speaking, this can be resolved with root canal therapy (RCT) and antibiotics. However, this is not always effective in removing the infection, in which case the tooth will need to be extracted in order to prevent the spread of infection.
In some cases, a dentist will find it necessary to pull teeth in order to clear the way for orthodontia work. If your teeth are too big for your mouth or perhaps there is a tooth that simply has no room to erupt through the gum your dentist may recommend tooth extraction. Your dentist will want to do this in order to make room for proper alignment through other dental procedures.
Compromised Immune System
Your dentist will recommend pulling a tooth if your immune system is compromised. For instance, if you plan to have an organ transplant or if you have been receiving chemotherapy. Additionally, if you suffer from periodontal gum disease that has led to the loosening or shifting of teeth your dentist may want to extract the problematic tooth.
If your dentist recommends tooth extraction do not worry, you will not have to be without a tooth forever. There are plenty of effective dental solutions for tooth replacement that you will surely find satisfactory!
