When we are living with pain, it can be difficult to lead a fulfilling life. Concentrating at work can become a major chore, and we might start to isolate ourselves from friends and family, as it is just more comfortable to stay home rather than going out to socialize. As if these problems weren't enough, studies are now showing that chronic pain - including the pain associated with TMD - could actually be affecting our memories.
TMD and Memory
According to a study recently published within the Journal of Neuroscience, chronic pain has the ability to inhibit normal cognitive functioning by disrupting the way that different parts of our brain cooperate in order to store short-term memories. Researchers tested their theories on rats in order to show that when living with pain, the brain can be overwhelmed and fail to store memories, making it difficult to recall things in the future.
TMD causes a variety of symptoms, the most severe of which tend to be chronic headaches and jaw pain. These symptoms can severely hinder your quality of life, and the recent research regarding pain and the memory shows us that this TMD-related pain could actually cause us to suffer problems with our recall.
While you might think that difficulty remembering things isn't a huge deal, consider how this could affect you at work and in some of your personal relationships. If you can't remember important procedures in the office, or if you have difficulty recalling conversations with your spouse or important dates, you might be facing some difficult situations in the future.
