How Can Poor Posture Affect Your Jaw?
When you have poor posture, you are placing the spine in an unintended position. This can cause stress on the jaw joint. For example, if you hunch over or slouch, your lower jaw will shift forward, resulting in teeth that do not fit together correctly on your upper and lower jaw. The skull will also move backward on the spinal column, and these movements can put stress onto the bones, joints, and muscles.
Your body will function at its best when all of the muscles, bones, and joints are in proper alignment. By routinely slouching down in your chair or hunching over a computer, you are retraining your body that it should hold itself in a position that is less than ideal, creating a domino effect that will eventually affect your jaw and cause TMJ disorder.
What Treatment Options Are Available?
If you have jaw pain that results from poor posture, your first step should be trying to change the way that you sit or stand so that your body is aligned properly. When you stand, you should ensure that your chest is forward and your shoulders are back, and you'll keep your upper body in a similar position while sitting.
If you have bad posture due to an injury, you should be sure to get that evaluated. A trip to your doctor, podiatrist, or chiropractor can evaluate your condition and recommend treatment options. Hopefully once your postural issue is treated, your jaw pain will subside.
